Over my time attending WKU I have created, led, and joined multiple undergraduate research projects that have been key contributors to my education and skill set. Some of these projects originated from classes, others originated from curiosity and interest in their topics. These projects also follow a clear path from my original major Computer Science to the major Mathematical Economics as I realized that the Math. Econ. major combined all my interests and skills in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Business, and Computer Science.

WKU for Google Glass

Lead Research Intern, Research Project Creator

Premier university Google Glass application for Western Kentucky University students. The application gives students the ability to retrieve information on the fly, including; meal plan dollar/count information, computer lab vacancies, campus restaurant openings, dining hall menus, and campus news and events. The application implemented the concept of micro interactions, which enabled students to retrieve the most relevant information effortlessly. Requested menus would be retrieved based on the time of day the feature was used, preferences would be stored to determine if the user preferred to see PC or Mac vacancies, and campus events would be shown based on the time of day--eliminating obsolete or passed events.

The Statistical Impact of Substance Abuse on Mental Health

Abstract: 

This paper develops the first quantitative economic analysis of substance abuse on mental health, represented by the number of documented psychiatric problems, using demographic and economic context from a representative, large-scale data set. This data comes from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This paper investigates if abusing particular substances leads to an increase in documented psychiatric problems of individuals in the United States.  Its findings prove that certain attributes of individuals as well as the abuse of specific drugs, do in fact increase the likelihood of psychiatric problems having occurred. The trends that were found raise questions about how certain drugs can be classified to those already at risk of encountering psychiatric problems - such as those who have seen hereditary trends of psychiatric problems in their families. If improved upon, this model allows for predictions to be made for geographical locations of future mental illness cases following substance abuse, and for new advocacy techniques to be used to combat the abuse of substances. It should be considered that this also may help identify a possible biological research opportunity as the connection between certain drugs and mental health may indicate an actual physical deterioration of the mind.


Key Word Usage between the Genders on Social Media via Data Mining and Data Analysis

Large scale data mining was done to Facebook's records via a self-written Mathematica program that featured timed Facebook data accessing, data presentation in easy to read formats, an algorithm to sort private, public and sub-private profiles, and multifunctional data sorting on the basis of gender, Facebook friend trees, and transitional words and phrases vs unique functioning words.
